Polycrystalline compact diamond (PCD) bits are constructed with a single layer of cutters mounted on the face of the bit in a predetermined pattern. These bits have a tough, wear resistant matrix body, and natural diamond gauge protection. The cutters can be rotated or replaced to maximize performance and extend the life of the bit. PCD bits are recommended for drilling in soft to medium, sedimentary formations that are not effectively drilled with surface set diamond bits. The cutters are designed to shear the formation being drilled. Increased cutter exposure allows for high penetration rates in softer formations when compared to surface set bits. PCD bits are offered with a number of custom design options to optimize performance in a variety of drilling conditions, and are available in all industry standard sizes.
